Responsibilities & Requirements

Job Description for Assistant or Associate Professor of English/Humanities

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at Kettering College is seeking to fill an open-rank* faculty position in English/Humanities. The individual filling this position will be teaching primarily First-year Composition (writing and research) classes and Humanities electives. A multi-disciplinary candidate is preferred, which could include expertise and training in healthcare humanities, art, music, and/or history. The candidate must demonstrate readiness to develop and teach on-line and face-to-face courses.

This position will be offered as a standard contract; this is the traditional Fall and Spring academic schedule. It is possible that this could be an extended contract (including a summer semester) depending on the candidate’s willingness to participate in \ student support and/or the candidate’s multidisciplinary training.

Intended start date August 2025.

*Rank and compensation will be determined based on the candidate's educational background, professional and teaching experience, and scholarly achievements.

Teaching:

  • Course Development and Management: Organize course planning and revision to maintain academic and professional standards, develop syllabi, and ensure content relevance. Continuously update course materials in the LMS and ensure timely grading and academic reporting.
  • Learning Environment and Instruction: Create and deliver an effective learning environment through diverse instructional methods, including case studies and hands-on activities, while presenting or coordinating classroom learning and supervision of independent study.
  • Student Support and Assessment: Respond appropriately to student assignments, and regularly review students' academic progress, offering guidance and referrals to Student Success services as needed.
  • Professional Development and Teaching Methods: Participate in professional development to stay updated on contemporary expertise, best practices, and emerging trends. Adapt teaching methods based on feedback and research while integrating a Christ-centric educational approach.
  • Responsibility and Accountability: Accept responsibility for student learning as per workload assignment, maintain accurate records, produce syllabi on time, and calculate grades as required by institutional policies.

Service:

  • Institutional and Departmental Service: Participate in departmental meetings, institutional committees, and collaborative initiatives focused on curriculum development and program assessment.
  • Community Engagement and Professional Development: Engage in outreach initiatives to strengthen community ties and represent the institution to enhance the institution's presence as a Christ-centric contributor, while contributing to the scholarly community through professional conferences and workshops.
  • Student Support and Mentorship: Provide academic advising and mentorship to students, supporting their academic and career growth.

Scholarship:

  • Professional Development and Research: Engage in ongoing professional development and participate in research activities related to your academic discipline.
  • Collaboration and Networking: Explore collaborative research opportunities with colleagues and actively contribute to relevant professional organizations.
  • Conference Participation and Presentations: Attend and present at academic and professional conferences to share knowledge and stay current in the field.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Support for Institutional Values and Culture: Uphold and promote the Seventh-day Adventist faith-based culture, standards, and values of Kettering College in all professional activities.
  • Student Support and Guidance: Provide student recommendations, participate in advising, and engage with student organizations and College-sponsored events to support student life and development.
  • Professional Compliance and Contribution: Maintain current professional licensure or registry relevant to academic appointments and contribute to teaching evaluations through peer reviews and self-assessments.
  • Adherence to College Policies: Enforce College rules and regulations, such as the Honor Code, and ensure compliance with institutional governance and management standards.
  • Administrative and Reporting Duties: Maintain accurate records and complete required reports to meet institutional, fiscal, and accreditation requirements, contributing to a caring and collegial community.

Job Requirements:

  • Master's degree in relevant field to the courses you would be teaching 

Or preferably

  • PhD in English/Composition with a Master’s Degree in an additional discipline as mentioned in the Job description
